Lithium-ion batteries: the ideal choice for heated clothing

Lithium-ion batteries are ideally suited for heated clothing because of their high energy density and light weight. This means they can store more energy in a compact form, keeping you warmer for longer without causing discomfort. Moreover, they can recharge quickly and efficiently, making them perfect for everyday use in heated clothing such as those from HEATDRY.

Safety of our batteries

At HEATDRY, safety comes first. Our batteries are carefully wrapped in black foil, which acts as an extra layer of protection. This foil prevents short circuits, protects the battery from physical damage and minimises the risk of overheating. As a result, you can be confident that your HEATDRY clothing is safe in any environment.

2. Batteries and thermal performance

Battery capacity, voltage and wattage: what does it mean for you?

A battery's capacity, expressed in milliamp-hour (mAh), determines how long it lasts. The higher the mAh, the longer your heated clothing will last. The voltage (V) of the battery affects the power of the heating elements; the higher the voltage, the hotter the elements can get. Wattage (W) and watt-hour (Wh) indicate how quickly and efficiently energy is converted into heat. At HEATDRY, we strive for the optimal balance between capacity, voltage and wattage to deliver maximum performance.

Why 7.4V DC batteries?

For most of our HEATDRY items, we have deliberately chosen a 7.4V DC battery and heating system. This voltage provides enough power to keep the heating elements functioning optimally, especially in cold conditions. For gloves and outdoor clothing, a 7.4V DC battery is absolutely essential. 1.5V AA batteries or a 5V USB battery simply cannot provide enough power to keep the elements warm for long periods of time. You will find that gloves operating on these lower voltages quickly drop in temperature as soon as you go outside and are unable to provide the same warmth as our 7.4V heated gloves.

For socks and T-shirts, which are usually worn inside shoes or under other layers of clothing, a 5V system may suffice. This is because the heating elements can retain their heat better in sealed or insulated conditions. However, it is crucial here that the elements can reach a certain temperature, which depends on the amperage (amps) and wattage of the elements. By finding the right balance between these factors, we ensure that even at a lower voltage, the heat performance is optimal.

Why we work with two batteries

In many of our outerwear items, we use two batteries instead of one. This dual battery system gives the heating elements more power, allowing for higher temperatures. In addition, this system significantly extends battery life. So with HEATDRY, you not only stay warmer, but also enjoy your heated clothing longer, even in extreme cold. So HEATDRY will keep you even warmer, and allow you to enjoy your heated clothing even longer, even in low ambient temperatures.

3. Design and wearing comfort

Designed for maximum comfort

When designing HEATDRY clothing, we paid great attention to wearing comfort. The weight of the batteries has been kept to a minimum, so they are hardly noticeable when worn. In addition, the battery compartments are strategically placed so as not to hinder freedom of movement. We also use flexible battery housings and soft materials so that they feel comfortable against the skin and can be easily stored in pockets or special compartments. The result is heated clothing that you barely feel, but whose warmth you experience immediately.
